U.S. Open 2006: Andre Agassi’s Sad Farewell!

Andre Agassi will finally retire at the end of this year’s U.S. Open. Agassi is true legend of Tennis. He has won 8 Grand Slams and numerous other titles during his glorified career. There is no question that he will be missed. I do believe that he made a big mistake by sticking around another year after his amazing run to the U.S. Open Final last year. Last year, Agassi had a chance to go out like an absolute Tennis God. This year, he will go out as a diminished God, if you will. Agassi played some of the best Tennis of his career to beat Blake and Ginepri in the last year’s U.S. Open. In the final, he even pushed the almighty Roger Federer to the limits. There is absolutely no shame to lose to a guy such as Federer. He is the present of Tennis, while Agassi is the past. Roger was the World No. 1, and the guy that everybody is comparing with the great Sampras. So, Agassi lost to him in the final. I do not understand why he decided to continue for another year. Did he honestly think that he had one more GrandSlam in him? Did he really think that he would make it to another Final or even win a title. Maybe he did! I would have if I had played like Agassi did during those two amazing weeks. But, sportsmen tend to get greedy often, and that’s what let Agassi down. He should have retired last year when he had a chance to go out on top. It would have been the perfect ending to an amazing career. Now, Agassi faces the possibility of losing to Andre Pavel, which will all due respect is no Federer. Last year, Agassi could have passed the torch from one legend to another. This year, the best he probably can do is to reach the third round, even though he would need a miracle to beat a fiesty Baghdatis. While none of this will take anything away from Agassi’s amazing career, it is certainly sad to see Agassi lose to guys who are not in the top 50. I certainly admire the fact that Agassi decided to let people know that he was going out, so they could celebrate his career with him. But, going out as a U.S. Open finalist would have been more deserving for Agassi.
